The 2011 M:tG Canadian National Championship

MAIN EVENT INFORMATION

Date:  August 20th & 21st, 2011

Location:  Hilton Toronto Airport Hotel & Suites - Mississauga Ballroom (5875 Airport Rd., Mississauga) 1-905-677-9900 map

Registration:  Qualified entrants may register on-site on Friday evening or Saturday morning prior to the event.  Registration particulars to come.

Format Details: 

Day 1: 3 rounds Standard, Booster Draft #1, 3 rounds Draft, Booster Draft #2, 1 round Draft

Day 2: 2 rounds Draft, 3 rounds Standard, cut to Top 8 (Standard).  Players who lose their semi-final matches will play for 3rd/4th place

 

Schedule:

Seatings for player meetings will be posted at 9:00 am on both Saturday and Sunday. 

Players are expected to be on-site at this time.

Round 1 on Saturday and Round 8 on Sunday will begin shortly after the conclusion of the player meetings (approx. 9:15am)

 

Prizes:

The top 4 players will receive invites to compete in the World Championships in San Francisco, CA (Nov 17-20, 2011)

The top 3 players comprise the Canadian National Team for the team competition portion of Worlds, with the 4th place player filling the "Alternate" role for the team.

LAST CHANCE QUALIFIERS (GRINDERS) INFORMATION

Date:  Friday, August 19th

Location:  Hilton Toronto Airport Hotel & Suites - Mississauga Ballroom (5875 Airport Rd., Mississauga) 1-905-677-9900 map

Cost:  $30 (Sealed Deck), $20 (Standard)

Format: 

Magic 2012 Sealed Deck & Standard Constructed. 

All events are single elimination. 

Top player from each flight receives an invite to Canadian Nationals.

Product (pity) prizes for 2nd-8th place players.

Registration: 

Grinder registration occurs on-site (no pre-registration). 

These 32-person events will begin as they fill. 

Registration for the day's first grinders will open at 9:30 am.  Play begins at 10:00 am. 

Sealed grinders will no longer spawn after 6:00 pm.  Standard grinders will no longer spawn after 7:00 pm.

Notes: 

24K, REL Competitive

"Sudden Death" rules are in effect for matches that are not complete at the end of a round.

HOTEL INFORMATION

Players wishing to obtain a room at the venue are offered a nightly rate of $89 plus tax if they book prior to August 1st.

NEW:  Parking at the venue is ordinarily $16 per day.  However, we will have parking passes available at the registration stage for $10.  Just park your car (no charge to enter), and purchase a ticket from us before you leave.

CONSTRUCTED WIN-A-BOX 8-MANs

Formats:  Standard & Extended - Single Elimination

Cost:  $15.00

Prizes:  Winner receives a full box from their choice of Magic 2012, Scars of Mirrodin, Mirrodin Beseiged, or New Phyrexia.

These events are enrolled continuously and begin as they fill.

 

COMMANDER 4-PLAYER SIT N' GOs

Format:  Commander Constructed (rules)

Cost:  $5.00

Prizes:  Winner of the table receives 6 booster packs (players may agree to a "2 boosters if you eliminate a player" structure instead if they wish).

These events are enrolled continuously and begin as they fill.

Friday, August 19th

LAST CHANCE QUALIFIERS (GRINDERS)

See above.

 

THE DAY AFTER THURSDAY NIGHT MAGIC (TDATNM) with BOUNTIES!

Format:  Magic 2012 Sealed Deck - 4 round Swiss

Schedule:  Event Registration from 4:00 - 5:00 pm; Event starts at 5:10 pm

Cost: $25.00

Bounties: 

At the start of the event, a number of round 1 matches are selected randomly to receive a "Bounty Badge."  The winners of these matches keep the badges and are awarded a product prize (1 or more booster packs).  In subsequent matches each player with a badge wears it to show they are a Bounty Player.  The winners of matches involving Bounty Players get (or keep) the badges and that round's bounty prize.  Bounty Players who play one another get twice the prize for that round, and one of the badges gets redistributed randomly in the following round.

Prizes:

One Promotional Foil will be given to each participant (nope... don't ask what it is... it's a seeeecret).  Prizes based on final number of match points.  Winners of Promotional Foils as prizes will get to choose from among available promo cards, no duplicate picks permitted.

Decklists will not be used, but if you get caught cheating at an event like this, we will put posters of your face around town with the caption "Pathetic Desperate Loser" and also see to it you sort of don't get to play sanctioned Magic for a while. 

Never exchange ANYTHING for a match result and never randomly determine an outcome of a match.  These are both Very Bad Things and will get a person in trouble.

 

Saturday, August 20th

 

MAGIC 2012 BOOSTER DRAFT FREE-FOR-ALL

Format:  Magic 2012 Booster Draft - Swiss with Booster Draft Playoff (DCI recommended number of rounds & playoff cut)

Players will play within their draft pods for rounds 1-3.  From round 4 onward, all pods are merged and players may play outside their pods.

Schedule:  Event Registration from 9:00 to 10:00 am; Event starts at 10:10 am.

Cost:  $20.00

Prizes: 

Product prizes to all players in the playoff, as well as players with a Swiss record of X-2 or better.

In addition to booster packs, a selection of foil Magic 2012 cards will be available to the top 8 players.  At the conclusion of the playoffs, the top 8 players will "draft" these cards into their personal collections, in order of finish.

GENERIC GRAND PRIX STANDARD TRIAL

Format:  Standard Constructed - Swiss with Top 8 Playoff

Schedule:  Event Registration from 2:00 - 3:00 pm; Event starts at 3:10 pm

Cost:  $15.00

Prizes:

Winner receives a 3-round bye to be used at a future Grand Prix prior to September 2012 (such as... say... GP Montreal in September 2011)

Product prizes also awarded to players with a Swiss record of X-2 or better.  All product prizes will be based on SWISS RECORD.

Sunday, August 21st

 

CANADIAN LEGACY CHAMPIONSHIP - Sponsored by OMG Games

Format:  Legacy Constructed - Swiss with Playoff (DCI recommended number of rounds & playoff cut)

Schedule:  Event Registration from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm; Event starts at 12:10 pm.

Cost:  $20.00

Prizes:

Winner receives 4 foil Dark Confidants.

2nd place receives Italian Moat

Top 8 finishers receive credit at the OMG Games vendor booth, who will carry a variety of Legacy relevant cards.  Specific dollar amounts will be based on attendance.

Notes:

K-value TBD.  REL Competitive.

GENERIC GRAND PRIX SEALED TRIAL

Format:  Scars Block Sealed Deck - Swiss with Top 8 Booster Draft

Schedule:  Event Registration from 10:00 to 11:00 am; Event starts at 11:10 am

Cost:  $30.00

Prizes:

Winner receives a 3-round bye to be used at a future Grand Prix prior to September 2012 (Hey!  How about GP Montreal in September?)

Winner receives 2-nights accommodation at the staff hotel (Hotel Le Dauphin) for GP Montreal -- $250+ value

Product prizes also awarded to players with a Swiss record of X-2 or better.  All product prizes will be based on SWISS RECORD.
